Aug. 25 - A manhole cover that exploded near a busy St. Paul intersection brought firefighters and utility crews to the scene on Saturday afternoon.
Companies were called to Carroll Avenue, just west of Snelling Avenue shortly after 4 p.m. for a report of smoke and flames shooting from a manhole after an explosion.
Engine 14 found smoke seeping from the manhole. The cover was flipped onto its top and laying partially over the manhole opening.
Firefighters from Squad 2 monitored the atmosphere around the affected manhole and other manholes in the area. The crew from Engine 14 deployed a handline as a precaution and Engine 5 blocked the opposite end of the street.
Residents of the 1600 block of Carroll told said they heard two loud explosions and then saw the smoke.
Xcel Energy and St. Paul Public Works officials responded to determine the cause of the explosion.
