Jan. 2 - A firefighter was injured following a Mayday at the scene of a house fire in St. Paul’s North End neighborhood Monday morning.
Crews were dispatched to a report of smoke from a window in the 1400 block of St. Albans Street around 8:10 a.m. Engine 18 arrived and reported smoke and flames showing from the 1 1/2-story dwelling at 1456 St. Albans St. and firefighters deployed a pre-connect to the front door.
Engine 5 arrived and secured a water supply for Engine 18 and Ladder 22′s crew began search operations.
As crews made their way into the structure, a firefighter fell through the floor and landed in the basement. The basement was involved in fire and a Mayday was called. An immediate second alarm was dispatched to bring additional resources.
Engine 8 and Squad 2 were dispatched to the alley to pull additional attack lines into the structure. Ladder 18 was ordered to the A-side of the structure to assist with removal of the firefighter.
As units arrived on scene, firefighters used a hoseline to push back the fire near the firefighter. A ladder was placed into the basement and the firefighter was removed within 10 minutes of the Mayday. Medic 17 transported the firefighter to Regions.
Crews then encountered heavy smoke from the attic and Ladder 8′s crew ascended Ladder 22′s aerial to cut two ventilation holes in the roof. Squad 3 brought a hoseline to the attic and knocked down the remaining pockets of fire.
The second alarm companies were released by 9 a.m. and firefighters continued checking for hot spots throughout the home.
A second firefighter was evaluated for smoke inhalation.
Command cleared the scene about 10 a.m., while the fire investigator remained on scene to search for he cause of the fire.
